Milton Keynes: from punchline to powerhouse

Milton Keynes is going places.

Last month, the government announced the locations of seven new towns that will form part of the most ambitious housebuilding programme in more than half a century. Two of the locations were in and around Milton Keynes, with the Buckinghamshire city set to benefit from 80,000 new homes, with new jobs, schools, green space and transport links planned from the start.

Milton Keynes is also slap bang in the middle of the Oxford-Cambridge growth corridor, which may not have the zippiest title, but is set to add up to £78bn to the UK economy by 2035, according to the government.

Throw in the fact that the city has also been longlisted for UK City of Culture 2029, reflecting its growing cultural and creative offer, and that Universal is planning a major theme park and resort just over the M1 near Bedford, opening around 2031, and you have a city that has a lot of reasons to be cheerful.

It's a far cry from the bad old days when Milton Keynes's main claim to fame was as the punchline to any number of lazy jokes.

Turnaround in fortunes

The city's turnaround in fortunes has also made it a plum destination for event planners. With fast rail connections, purpose-built infrastructure and a flexible mix of venues, Milton Keynes sits as one of the UK’s most practical and scalable destinations for meetings and events.

Vicky Pryce, event manager at Event Works Europe, experienced the city on a recent fam trip and describes it as “a fantastic option to offer our clients”. She highlights its “varied venues from luxurious countryside hotels to modern city centre locations with state of the art AV facilities”, adding that “for those clients who really want the wow factor the Red Bull MK7 event space was a personal favourite”.

Purpose-built and forward-thinking, MK (as the locals call it) blends contemporary venues with expansive green space, offering planners a balance of efficiency, accessibility and delegate experience. From high-spec city-centre hotels to countryside retreats, the destination caters to a wide range of event formats.

Hotel La Tour offers premier, high-tech meeting and event spaces in the city centre across nine rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, an exclusive outdoor terrace,, and panoramic views from the Fourteen Sky Restaurant.
Just outside the centre in a countryside setting, Horwood House Hotel boasts 15 flexible, recently refurbished meeting spaces for up to 270 delegates.
For high-impact events, MK-7 at the Oracle Red Bull Racing Technology Campus is a unique venue, offering spaces for conferences, gala dinners, and product launches surrounded by F1 heritage and championship-winning cars. One of Milton Keynes’ strongest selling points is its central location. Positioned between London and Birmingham, it is easily accessible by both rail and road. 32 minutes from London Euston by train, it has direct rail connections across the UK and strong motorway links via the M1 .

Simon Thatcher, general manager at Kents Hill Park, explains: “Milton Keynes is a really easy place to bring people together; the transport links are strong, which takes a lot of the stress out of planning.”

This makes the city a natural meeting point for national events, particularly for organisations bringing together delegates from across the UK.

Beyond the meeting room, Milton Keynes offers a wide range of activities and experiences that enhance delegate engagement.

Options include indoor skiing at Snozone, motorsport experiences at nearby Silverstone, theatre productions and live entertainment, plus a wide choice of restaurants and bars

Green space

A defining feature of Milton Keynes is its integration of nature into an urban environment.

The city offers extensive parkland and landscaped spaces with 15 lakes and 11 miles of canals - and more than 22 million trees. (Yes, you read that right).

Jill Hawkins of Aniseed PR, a longtime Milton Keynes resident, explains: “It has all the infrastructure, energy and ambition of a city, yet it sits comfortably within the countryside. You can host a conference, then step outside into open green space within minutes.”

This balance supports wellbeing-focused events and provides opportunities for outdoor networking and team building.

A destination on the rise

Milton Keynes is continuing to evolve, with major developments set to strengthen its appeal further.

CMK:Live is a proposed £76 million, 4,000-capacity, multi-purpose events venue to be built on the site of the old bus station. Operated by ATG Entertainment, the venue aims to host large-scale music concerts, comedy, and live performances, with an anticipated 2029 opening.

Destination Milton Keynes is the official tourism service for the city, promoting a wide range of high-quality events venues across Milton Keynes and the surrounding area.

Andrew Kirby, GM of Destination Milton Keynes, says: "With easy road and rail access and cost-effective solutions, Milton Keynes is attracting an increased amount of regional and national events seeking venues with multiple, flexible spaces and entertainment options on their doorstep."

As Hawkins puts it: “What really sets Milton Keynes apart is the breadth of what it offers. We’ve just heard that that we have been ‘long listed’ as one of nine places in the running for the UK City of Culture 2029. People may not associate MK with culture, but we have several theatres, galleries and music venues - and we are host to so many festivals and sporting events. My advice to anyone thinking of holding an event here is to simply come for a visit and you will fall in love with our green city.”

With continued investment and a clear trajectory, Milton Keynes is positioning itself as a destination not just for today’s events, but for the future of the UK meetings industry.
