Going green in Aberdeen
The award-winning P&J Live is the most sustainable venue of its kind in the UK. Powered, lit and cooled by its own energy centre, the team works with organisers to reduce the environmental impact of each event
Opened in September 2019, the £333 million P&J Live complex offers 48,000 sqm of multi-purpose event space, world-class conference and exhibition halls, a superior arena, spacious hospitality boxes and an excellent restaurant all sustainably powered by local, renewable energy sources. The venue generates energy from local food and garden waste, which becomes hydrogen gas.
Located right next to Aberdeen International Airport - the UK's most connected regional airport – P&J Live works with Stagecoach and First Bus, who operate hydrogen and electric powered vehicles to transport delegates between the airport, venue and city centre, while air partner LoganAir offers 30 per cent discounts on flights as it works to offset carbon emissions by 2040 through its GreenSkies programme.
P&J Live’s processes and procedures help make events sustainable and reduce their overall carbon footprint. For instance, P&J Live’s team works with organisers to provide a paperless conference, utilising complimentary digital signage and marketing. Food and drink served within the venue are sourced locally where possible, reducing food travel miles.
Audio-visual technology is integrated into each room/event space, including touch screen integrated technologies, saving costs in the budget. And there are two on-site hotels, the adjoining four-star Hilton with 200 bedrooms and the 150-room Aloft Hotel, reducing travel requirements.
The venue has signed the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge
- A commitment to achieve net zero by 2050 and halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
- Recent accolades include being named Venue of the Year more than 20,000sqm at the AEO Excellence Awards 2022 and Best Conference Venue (401-1100 Theatre Style) – Conference & Events Awards 2022.
Built with the environment in mind
More than 29,000 trees have been planted in the venue’s surrounding green space and seven kms of footpaths serve the site attracting both people and wildlife to the area, enhancing ecology and encouraging habitats. Almost 99 per cent of materials on the site previously were reused during construction.
A world-leader in energy, Aberdeen’s academic prowess is internationally-renowned while it is leading the way in sectors including Medical, Life Sciences, Fishing and Food & Agriculture
