Madrid, the city where events come to life

The charms of Spain’s capital have never been more popular. And it’s no wonder. The world’s most open city, encouraging its visitors to live life to the full, has emerged as a top events destination offering a variety of world-class attractions and experiences

The incredible cultural wealth that developed in Spain over centuries is on glorious display in Madrid’s extraordinary museums. Starting with, but by no means limited to, the famous ‘Golden Triangle’ of Paseo del Arte (Art Walk), home to the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza. The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Head to the restoration department at the Thyssen, the Prado or the Royal Tapestry Factory, where expert restorers explain the advanced technology they use and the complex preservation processes undergone by some of the world’s most famous artworks.

Experience the best flamenco

There are many authentic venues in Madrid hosting some of the world’s most talented flamenco artists, from Teatro Flamenco and Las Tablas to Corral de la Morería, the only tablao (flamenco venue) in the world with a Michelin star. Here, you’ll find exciting flamenco paired with a gourmet restaurant renowned for its creative cuisine. Also well worth visiting is Flamenco de Leones, close to El Retiro Park.

Enjoy the finest cuisine

You’ll find it all in Madrid, including 22 Michelin-starred restaurants and the world’s best chef, Dabiz Muñoz. The city’s gastronomy can be paired with sports, shopping, culture, music and entertainment, in activities ranging from a flamenco show with food to a Madrid Open tennis match combined with one of the world’s finest cuisines.

Madrid’s culinary culture is nothing new, of course. Casa Botín, founded in the city in 1725, is the world’s oldest restaurant, according to Guinness World Records, and a benchmark for traditional cuisine.

The Food Hall in Galería Canalejas offers a culinary journey through Spanish and international cuisine, and is fast becoming a gastro hotspot. With an area of more than 4,000 sqm, it boasts 13 restaurants including famous Michelin-starred establishments such as Monchis, by chef Julián Mármol.

Craftwork and tradition

One of the biggest trends in incentives currently is the desire to experience age-old local traditions, which makes sense in a globalised world. With its vibrant craft scene, artisan pieces and historic shops, Madrid is the perfect destination to head behind the scenes and explore the skills that have been honed over decades. Watching a craftsperson at work and hearing them explain their art has become one of Madrid’s many memorable experiences, and a way to really feel the spirit of the city and its history.

This is just a taste of the experiences on offer in this exciting city. These and more are featured in an incentives guide published by the Madrid Convention Bureau that suggests activities and innovative ideas for events. Find it here
