Sabah, Malaysian Borneo - a rising hub for business events
From its scenic coastline to its thriving knowledge clusters, Sabah is rapidly emerging as one of Southeast Asia’s most compelling destinations for business events
Once known predominantly for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, the Malaysian state at the northern tip of Borneo is now expanding its footprint as a regional hub for meetings, incentives and large-scale conferences. With strengthened government commitment, expanding infrastructure and deepening collaboration with academia and industry, Sabah is positioning itself as a destination where business growth aligns with authenticity, sustainability and legacy.

At the centre of this development is the Sabah Convention Bureau (SCB), established in June 2024 to formalise the state’s presence in the international MICE arena. Rather than focusing purely on promotion, the Bureau adopts a strategic approach: identifying Sabah’s strengths in fields such as biodiversity, marine science, healthcare, sustainable agriculture and renewable energy, then aligning these areas of expertise with international association needs. This knowledge-driven strategy strengthens Sabah’s standing within the broader Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), making it a natural gateway for regional co-operation.
Infrastructure for conferences of every scale
Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’s capital, sits at the heart of the state’s business events ecosystem. Its flagship venue, the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), is Borneo’s largest purpose-built convention facility and an anchor for international congresses, exhibitions and corporate gatherings. The city’s event landscape is complemented by unique cultural venues such as Hakka Hall and KDCA Hall, along with modern spaces including ITCC Grand Ballroom. Across the state, delegates benefit from nearly 27,000 hotel rooms, professional services, hybrid-ready meeting spaces and smooth connectivity via Kota Kinabalu International Airport.
This robust infrastructure is mirrored by rising confidence among planners. Sabah has successfully hosted international meetings including the IEEE Region 10 Conference 2025 (TENCON 2025), 19th International Conference on Knowledge Management in Organisations (KMO 2025) and Asia Pacific medical congresses such as the 20th Congress of the Asia Pacific Federation of Coloproctology, signalling its capability to deliver world-class events with regional relevance.
A destination built on knowledge and legacy
Sabah’s approach to business events extends beyond hosting. Increasingly, events are tied to knowledge exchange, academic collaboration and community benefit. SCB works closely with higher education institutions such as University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and industry partners to build events that create meaningful impact - from medical training workshops to biodiversity field projects and sustainable tourism initiatives.
The state’s conservation leadership reinforces this direction. With global recognition including UNESCO Triple Crown status for Kinabalu Park and major marine and rainforest reserves, Sabah provides an inspiring backdrop for events focused on environmental science, resilience and sustainability.
Incentives with soul, culture and adventure
Beyond conferences, Sabah offers exceptional incentive and team-building experiences. Delegates can be immersed in cultural villages, engage in conservation activities, cruise the Kinabatangan River, trek Mount Kinabalu or enjoy island-based programmes around Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. Each experience reflects Sabah’s unique combination of hospitality, nature and purposeful engagement.
From modern venues to meaningful legacies, Sabah presents a destination where professional excellence meets unforgettable experiences - a place where business events drive impact, connection and discovery.
