In a move that underscores the growing importance of
sustainability in the events industry, NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau has
partnered with event:decision to enhance responsible event practices across
North East England.
Through the partnership, NewcastleGateshead Convention
Bureau and event:decision are launching a customised version of the Impact:
Responsible Event Review digital platform, designed to help event
organisers assess and improve the sustainability of their events in North East
England.
Unlike traditional sustainability metrics that focus
primarily on emissions, this tool takes a more holistic approach. It enables
organisers to benchmark their event against industry standards and receive
tailored recommendations—such as how to partner with local colleges for student
volunteering, contribute to regional food donation programs, or offset their
carbon emissions through local initiatives.
“We’re delighted to be the first global destination to
take advantage of Impact: Responsible Event Reporting,” said Caroline
Reed, senior manager of business events at NewcastleGateshead Convention
Bureau. “This will give our event partners a great understanding of the
impact of their events in Northeast England, how our offering compares to other
destinations, as well as direct access to a local, sustainable supply chain.”
Why sustainability matters for conference destinations
The move comes at a critical time for the global events
industry, which is under increasing scrutiny for its environmental footprint.
From the energy used in convention centers to the waste generated at
large-scale gatherings, hosting an event can have significant consequences if
sustainability isn’t prioritised.
Matt Grey, CEO of event:decision, emphasised the
significance of the partnership, stating: “We are excited to partner with
NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau to champion responsible event practices in
the region. Together, we aim to demonstrate the destination’s ability to
deliver not only memorable, but responsible and sustainable experiences that
benefit both organisers and the local community.”
