Financial restraints and a lack of expertise are holding European meeting planners back when it comes to implementing sustainable practices, new research has revealed.
A bigger budget would help 46 per cent of planners create more sustainable meetings while almost two-thirds (64%) need more training and knowledge, according to a survey by Northstar Meetings Group – UK and sponsored by Copenhagen Convention Bureau.
The survey examines how meeting and event planners address sustainability and the changes they anticipate in the next few years.
Covering everything from waste management to the role of virtual meetings, it offers crucial insight into the sector’s strengths and weaknesses as it strives to hit net zero by 2050.
Some 156 meeting planners took part in the survey, which was conducted between January 16th – February 14th, 2023.
NMG-UK editorial director James Lancaster said: “While the research shows sustainability is now firmly on the agenda of meeting and event planners, and a subset is actively turning words into action, there is a lack of consistency across the board, which suggests that, for now at least, progress will continue to be patchy.”
