A Government led confidence campaign for the UK events industry is at the heart of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Events' (APPG) new Plan of Work for 2022.

And the APPG will also be supporting work around Protect Duty legislation and the introduction of event visas for international delegates.

The APPG's Plan of Work during the current Parliament is focused on five key areas of policy:

  • A Government led/supported confidence campaign
  • The impact of major events on local communities
  • A set of financial incentives to create new UK based events
  • A coordinated approach to bring existing international events to the UK
  • Government support to develop a more sustainable events strategy
In addition to the formal Plan of Work, the APPG will support the work of two specific initiatives that they believe can have a major impact on the events sector:
  • The introduction of the Protect Duty legislation, also known as Martyn’s Law.
  • The introduction of short term ‘event visas’ for international delegates attending UK events.
The APPG will also consider other representation from event sector organisations where they feel their remit enables it to lobby for direct Government support or intervention on a particular issue. For 2022, the APPG is also considering whether to widen its membership to include non-Parliamentarians as supporting partners, including commercial organisations, to extend its reach and engagement with the sector.

During the AGM, Theresa Villiers was re-elected as chair of the group for another year. “I am delighted to take on the chairmanship for another year,” said Villiers. I look forward to working with my colleagues on a cross-party basis on our new programme of activity, including generating ideas on how this country can bring further major international events here.”

The meeting also elected several vice chairs to support the work of the APPG, including Fay Jones MP, Bob Seely MP, Robert Largan MP, Alex Sobel MP, Simon Baynes MP and Mark Menzies MP.
