The
stage is set for one of the industry’s liveliest evenings of discussion and
networking, as registration officially opens for The Industry Great Debate
2026 - returning to the Cambridge Union Society on Thursday 15 January 2026.
Now
in its fourth edition, the annual debate is organised by the Alliance of
Independent Event Agencies (AIEA) in collaboration with the Cambridge Union
Society. This year’s motion, set to spark strong opinions and lively
discussion, is: “This house believes the integrity of familiarisation trips
is being compromised.”
The
event will bring together professionals from across the meetings and events
sector to discuss one of the industry’s most talked-about topics - the ethics,
purpose and perception of fam trips in a rapidly evolving marketplace.
Set
within the storied Cambridge Union Chamber, where figures from Winston
Churchill to the Dalai Lama have spoken, the debate will follow the Union’s
traditional format. Three speakers will argue for the motion, three against,
with audience members invited to contribute floor speeches before voting with
their feet to decide the winning side.
Following
the debate, guests will gather in The Orator Bar for drinks and networking as
the results are announced. Tickets are free of charge, but registration is
essential as capacity is limited. Event professionals can register online via
the official debate page.
Sabine
Edwards, chair of the AIEA, said: “The Great Debate has become a highlight of
the events calendar - a night that’s as thought-provoking as it is enjoyable.
This year’s motion promises to be particularly lively, exploring a subject that
touches everyone in our industry.”
Confirmed
speakers include Catherine Chaulet, president and CEO of Global DMC Partners,
and Chris Clarke, founder of Purple Dog Solutions and Leadership West, who will
argue for the motion. On the other side, Andrew Woods of Leonardo Hotels, Peter
Jackson, trustee of Red Blaze Trust, and Emma Waycot, founder of Vine Tree
Connections, will make the case for the opposition.
Further
speakers will be announced in the coming weeks via the AIEA’s social channels.
Event
agents are invited to apply for complimentary overnight accommodation provided by the debate’s sponsors. Rooms are limited and subject to
confirmation. Preferential rates are also available for attendees who are not
allocated complimentary accommodation.
“Hosting
the Great Debate in the Cambridge Union Chamber brings something special,”
added Edwards. “It’s not just about who wins the motion - it’s about
celebrating the art of conversation, challenging perspectives, and
strengthening our community.”
