More than 16,400 security professionals gathered at the NEC
Birmingham from 8–10 April for The Security Event, Europe’s largest
trade show for the sector, in a 'landmark week for counter-terrorism legislation
in the UK'.
The event featured more than 450 exhibitors and brought together
manufacturers, distributors and end users to explore the latest developments in
security technology, training and operational best practice.
This year’s gathering coincided with a historic legal
milestone: the passing of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, also
known as Martyn’s Law. The legislation, named in memory of Martyn Hett – one of
22 victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing – was given Royal Assent just
days before the event opened.
A minute’s applause was held at The Security Leaders
Summit to recognise the collaborative efforts behind the campaign for
Martyn’s Law, which was spearheaded by Martyn’s mother, Figen Murray, alongside
a wide coalition of industry leaders and security professionals.
Under the new law, venues with a capacity of 200 or more
people will be legally required to implement security measures aimed at
preventing and responding to potential terrorist threats. These include
training staff, enhancing situational awareness and improving emergency
preparedness.
Murray, who also delivered a session at the event, said:
“Martyn’s Law is a significant step forward in the UK’s counter terrorism
strategy and I am proud of the collective efforts of the security sector who
continue to ensure people are safe and secure when visiting public venues.
“The threat from terrorism in the UK has not disappeared and
I am determined to ensure nobody endures what my family has experienced since
Martyn was killed in the Manchester Arena terror attack on 22 May 2017. I look
forward to working with the Government, SIA, and security sector during the
implementation phase.”
In addition to a strong focus on legislation and policy, the
event featured a programme of workshops, live demonstrations and panel sessions
highlighting the role of cutting-edge technology and strategic planning in
safeguarding public spaces.
