Sustainability consultancy Greengage has launched a carbon calculator
specifically for measuring the carbon footprint of small and mid-sized meetings.
The EVENTsmart Impact Portal was launched to address the ‘missing
gap’ - the lack of carbon measurement available for meetings of between two and
100 attendees and help organisations of all sizes better meet their scope 3
carbon reduction goals.
Greengage said that while around 80 per cent of all meetings
fit into the small or mid-sized category, fewer than 5% were currently tracking
their environmental impact.
Louise Boyse, Greengage’s commercial director, said: “When
we talk about sustainable events, the conversation typically revolves around
large conferences, trade shows and corporate gatherings. Until now small
meetings have been a massive blind spot that actually have a huge impact on
emissions from the meetings and events sector.
“It’s easy to consider boardroom sessions, team catch-up,
client presentations and workshops as insignificant but collectively they
represent an enormous carbon footprint that has remained largely unmeasured and
unaddressed.”
The Impact Portal will provide users with an online overview
of carbon emissions with the option of upgrading for more detailed reports relating
to different locations. It will also provide QR codes for self-reporting and
include elements such as travel and community impact measurement.
Carbon offsetting has been integrated into the portal
through Carbon Footprint.
