The Institute of Event Management (IEM) is kicking off its bid to transform professional standards in sustainable event management with a workshop this month.

The kick-off workshop at ACC Liverpool on 19 August will bring together event professionals and academics to review the existing standards and start the transformation to professional standards using a number of existing models provided by the Chartered Management Institute and Chartered Institute of Personnel Development. It is planned to launch the professional standards at the opening of COP26 in Glasgow in November.

Susan Spibey, executive board chair of the IEM, said: "The standards will enable event professionals to define their career pathways in event management and leadership by benchmarking current skills against the IEM Professional Standards. The professional standards will set out best practice in management and leadership and will underpin the IEM products and services, specifically: Qualification, Apprentices, Membership, plus Continuing Professional Development.

"We encourage managers and leaders from across all parts of the events sector to join IEM members, fellows and partners at the workshop either in person or online.

"The UN Conference on Climate Change COP26 is using the ISO2012-1 on Sustainable Event Management to inform the organisation of the conference. As the new professional body for event management, the IEM will support the future development of ISO2012 and will enable its enhancement through the professional recognition of its practitioner members, associates and affiliates worldwide. It is planned to launch the professional standards at the opening of COP26 and we believe this will provide a valuable asset to UN 'Count us In' Programme and to the UN Sustainable Development Goals on Upskilling in the transformation of its professional standards."

Pre-registration information will be available on the website www.event-managers.institute
