Tributes have been paid from across the industry to Gail Tomlinson-Short, head of business development at Warwick Conferences, who has died following a battle with a brain tumour.
Warwick Conferences shared the news in a statement on LinkedIn, paying tribute to a colleague who spent almost three decades helping shape the business and building strong relationships across the meetings and events sector.
A spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Gail Tomlinson-Short.
“For nearly 30 years, Gail devoted herself to Warwick Conferences, playing a pivotal role in shaping the organisation into what it is today. Her leadership in business development was outstanding, but it was her warmth, generosity and genuine care for others that truly defined her impact.”
They added that Tomlinson-Short built lasting relationships across the industry and championed collaboration within the organisation.
“In May 2024, Gail was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Throughout her incredibly difficult journey, she showed remarkable courage and resilience,” the post said.
“After two major surgeries, she returned to work with characteristic strength and optimism. Even while facing her own challenges, she organised a charity walk with family and friends, raising £6,000 for The Brain Tumour Charity and over £4,000 for The Shakespeare Hospice.”
Tributes have been shared across the business events community following the news.
David Tremmil, chair of beam, said: “Gail was one of those genuinely lovely people you meet in this industry and never forget. I had the pleasure of working with her over the years and she was a beautiful human being inside and out.
“She always had a smile, always had time for people, and somehow managed to light up the room wherever she was.”
Paul Black, head of business events at VisitBritain, also paid tribute, saying: “This is such sad news. Gail inspired everyone around her with her leadership, passion and her deeply endearing humour and warmth.”
Sabine Edwards, chair of the AIEA, wrote: “Gail was one of the loveliest people you could meet - and so very strong. She will be very much missed by many.”
The Meetings Industry Association also shared its condolences, highlighting Tomlinson-Short’s support for colleagues during the pandemic.
It said: “Gail was a dedicated and generous member of our industry community. During the COVID-19 pandemic in particular, she worked tirelessly to support colleagues and peers across the sector, playing an active role in sharing vital updates and guidance from the MIA.”
They added: “Many of us will remember not only her professionalism, but also the warmth and kindness she brought to every conversation.”
Warwick Conferences said Tomlinson-Short would be “deeply missed”, adding that its thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues.
Her family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Brain Tumour Charity.
A celebration of life is set to take place at Alcester Baptist Church, Warwickshire, at 12.45pm on Saturday 21 March, followed by a continued celebration at The Slate at The University of Warwick at around 3.30pm. Attendees are encouraged to wear a hint of the colour green.
