David Ball, founder and chairman of Brandfuel, has died aged 64 after several months of treatment for cancer.
Ball, who launched the agency in December 2004 under its original name Sprout, went on to build it into one of the UK’s leading experiential businesses. Known for his sharp strategic mind and generous mentorship, he was widely regarded as one of the sector’s most influential figures.
Over two decades, Brandfuel grew a blue-chip client portfolio and an enviable awards record, while Ball himself became a familiar and respected presence across the industry, regularly judging major awards schemes and moderating panels.
Brandfuel’s work under Ball’s leadership was defined by a strong sense of social purpose. The agency has long supported charities and global organisations tackling major humanitarian challenges, with clients including One Young World, the Humanitarian Leadership Academy, BGC and STORM. He also supported numerous charities personally and was known for taking time to champion young talent entering the industry.
Away from events, Ball achieved a rare sporting distinction as the only athlete to have represented both Great Britain and Jamaica in the International Triathlon Union Long Distance World Championships - an achievement that brought him great pride.
Ball co-founded Brandfuel with CEO Sue Sawyer, alongside finance director Michael Mitchell, who have worked closely with him throughout the agency’s 20-year history. The company has since grown to more than 75 staff and has been expanding its international work as part of a long-term strategy developed with Ball.
“It has been an absolute privilege to work with David creating the impressive agency that Brandfuel has become over the past 20 years,” said Sawyer. “We are devastated by his loss, and will do our utmost to continue to build on his huge achievements in the months ahead.”
